Burning The Souffle

"A Woman Happily In Love, She Burns The Souffle"

I like making things. This winter I made a scarf (which I wore EVERYWHERE due to the extreme cold) and 4 no-sew fleece blankets.  None of that required any sewing, except for one end of the scarf where I had to sort of stitch the yarn into itself to keep it from unraveling.

I like to sew, I even have a sewing machine, I just don’t do it much.  Mainly what I’ve made with the sewing machine is throw pillows (cheap way to change your decorating style).  Another thing that keeps me from the machine is the fact that I can’t exactly put it on my lap and chat while I’m using it. I like my loom knitter because I can use it while I’m chatting with people.  However, that being said, I am willing to banish myself to the dining room table for a while if I could make one thing:

A quilt.

I REALLY, REALLY, REALLY want to make one.  I don’t know why, but I feel as if I MUST make one soon or go crazy.

The only problem with this is that A) I have no idea where to even START when making a quilt (or what to do after I get started, for that matter) and B) I am not a big direction follower.  When I make something, I generally look at the instructions for a few minutes to see how it goes together, and then just go about doing it however I want.  When I made my no-sew blankets, I never measured anything, I just DID. They turned out great, I gave one to my mom, my dad, my sister, and D. They all liked them.  I even think they looked better than the pictures in the tutorial because the fringes weren’t all the same length (hence the no measuring thing) and it gave them a little bit of “poof” around the edges.  Honestly, they were really cute. I loved making them and this winter I will make more. But they are pretty easy. I want a challenge. I want to make a quilt!!!

This is where you all come in.  Have you made a quilt before? How did you do it? What is a good simple quilt to start off with?  How long will it take? What size should I start off with? I really want to make one big enough to at least cover up with, I know a baby quilt would be smaller (and probably easier) but I do not have a baby right now.  It would be fun to make one as a gift, but I really have a lot of babies in my life right now (Seriously, I am really close with my extended family, and we have FOUR babies in the family right now) so it wouldn’t be fair to make one for one and not another one.  So where should I start????
